| While
keeping the overall feel of a classic 18th century style gown, this modern
interpretation follows the shape of the body rather than compressing and
lifting the figure. Unlike authentic reproductions of this period
which would finish on the waist and flare out into the skirt, this contemporary
version has a longer bodice line which follows the natural bust and
elongates the body in a way that greatly flatters the waist. This is aided
by the focus of decoration on the centre front panel and by the large skirt. |

| This
elaborately decorated gown is constructed in an ivory silk dupion embroidered
in a metallic gold thread. The intricately ruched ribbon detail is
painstakingly applied by hand to avoid the heavier "hammered down" effect
which would occur if attached by machine. The boned stomacher style
front panel has alternating bands of beaded and metallic lace. Like
all Rossetti gowns, it is fully lined throughout.
This
is merely one treatment of this style of gown. There are many alternative
lace and fabric combinations possible - at least 300 different colours
of silk dupion are available, before considering different fabrics such
as duchesse satins and thai silks. This design would work equally
well in plain fabrics as embroidered ones. A close reproduction of
the gown as shown: £2500 with embroidered fabric or £1800
with a plain fabric. |
